Any finish that I do on my table will be protected by several layers of oil-based polyurethane. There is a difference between PURE tung oil and products that contain tung oil. Pine is hard to stain for a couple of reasons. It’s so soft and gets dented and is full of ugly knotholes ….. Dull paper mashes the wood fibers instead of cutting them, which also creates a muddy appearance when you stain. Hopefully someone else will have some info for you. I’ve never seen a pro use a wax like Annie Sloan for something like that (I think it’s too soft), but I’ve seen both Minwax and Briwax used for that. I can’t wait to try this!
